Some of us are happier than others. Some people don’t know much happiness at all, due to depression, illness, or life circumstances.
Nonetheless, most people seek happiness. But. What if happiness isn’t something we have to chase down like it’s hiding around the next corner?
What if it’s actually the natural state of a body and mind that feel cared for and safe? At least, for most of us.
So often we’re told happiness will show up after we reach some predetermined milestone. Or when we meet the right person. Or that day when we finally cross that big goal off the list.
But here’s the thing. Happiness isn’t waiting out there like some sort of finish line. It just might be that it’s already inside us. The trick is learning to notice it. But we also must honor how our own brain is wired.
Science reminds us that joy looks different for everyone. What fills one person with meaning might not spark the same light in another.
For some, happiness is found in a bowl of hot soup. Or it might be sharing old family jokes and memories. For others, it could be the quiet goodness of a walk through the woods. Still others might be happy while skydiving. It might be petting a cat. Or listening to music. For some of us, it is the thrill of creating something out of nothing.
So what we love, what brings us joy, is different. The paths are as varied as we are.
And maybe, just maybe, here’s the beautiful part. When we lean into the things that truly make us happy, it does amazing things for our bodies and souls.
This just might calm our anxious thoughts and take away the edges of stress. Being aware of our little joys also helps us on our path to gratitude, curiosity, and hope.
Happiness becomes a sort of companion to us. This is with us when we choose to care for ourselves in simple, genuine ways.
If happiness comes hard to us, perhaps we can open ourselves to all the little moments of joy that might be right next to us. Waiting. And that awareness will fill our loving hearts.
