Letting the symphony unfold within us

Today, I marveled at the fact that I can turn on the faucet and, magically, clean, drinkable water comes out whenever I want it. I also rejoiced in the fact that my fingers know what to do when I tell them what to do. There are a million things like this each day.

There’s just a little bit of magic in deciding that this moment is enough. Exactly as it is.  That doesn’t mean that we stop hoping or dreaming.  Or that we quit trying to make our lives better.

It simply means we stop postponing our joy. I’ll say it again.  There are a million little things in each day that are truly incredible. Allowing the present to be “enough” opens our hearts to a softer, more joyful place right now.

Not later. Not when things are perfect.

We would do well to realize that right now is okay.
Because, believe me, it will never be absolutely perfect here on this Earth.

We become whole when we can make room for gratitude. Life, after all, is built in moments. We shouldn’t wait for some grand thing to happen before letting ourselves feel peace or contentment. If we do, we will miss the very core of living.

Here is that timeless piece often titled My Symphony. It is a quiet and thoughtful manifesto for living well.

To live content with small means,
to seek elegance rather than luxury,
and refinement rather than fashion.
To be worthy, not respectable.
To be wealthy, not rich.
To study hard, think quietly,
Talk gently, act frankly.
To listen to stars and birds,
babes and sages,
with an open heart.
To bear all cheerfully.
To do all bravely.
To await occasions.
To hurry never.
To let the spiritual, unbidden and conscious,
grow up through the common.
To notice what others rush past.
To choose enough when more is offered.
To live without armor.
To move without force.
To leave things better than I found them,
even if no one notices.
This is not a performance.
It is a way of being.
This is my symphony.

Every day moments we often overlook.

Common, good moments. Each one.

May our lives become a symphony, one simple, beautiful note at a time.
