Angels.
Whether you see them or not, they have been part of human history for thousands of years. Sometimes we think of them as heavenly messengers, guardians, or symbols of hope. Or maybe we don’t think of them at all.
The word angel comes from the Greek word angelos, meaning “messenger.” In the Hebrew Bible, the equivalent word is mal’akh, which also means messenger. Angels were primarily understood as beings who carried messages between God and humanity.
Interestingly, the Bible rarely describes angels as the gentle, winged figures as they are often pictured today. In many accounts, they appear as ordinary people. In some passages, they are so awe-inspiring that their first words are often, “Do not be afraid.”
Today, angels appear everywhere. Not only in religious traditions, but also in literature, music, art, and movies. We see them everywhere in stores.
People speak of “guardian angels.” Those rare individuals who arrive at just the right moment to offer kindness when it is needed most.
Whether angels exist as spiritual beings or not, the image of them offers us a simple reminder. They tell the story of the goodness we can bring into one another’s lives.
Either way, perhaps there is something worth remembering.
Sometimes the closest thing to an angel is an ordinary person who chooses compassion over indifference, generosity over selfishness, and hope over despair.
Maybe today, someone needs one.
Or maybe… It’s you.
And this, too, is a great day to look around and see what there is to see.
May we always see with fresh eyes.
