The Shame By Linda Stowe
I don’t remember the first time I felt shame, but I remember the feeling clearly. As a child, it probably came when I was caught in a lie or doing something I knew was wrong. As a student, I felt shame as a white person when I read about slavery and the treatment of Native Americans. Later, I felt it as an American whenever I saw an image of a starving child in a so-called Third World country. These days, I am sometimes overwhelmed by the shame stirred by the behavior I see around me, and the feeling is deeply distressing.
More distressing still is the realization that those responsible for such behavior seem to feel none at all. Did they never experience shame, or have they grown so accustomed to it that it has faded into a dull ache, barely registered? There is a chasm between the actions of a bully and those of a murderer, yet they may share one chilling trait: an inability to feel shame at all.

Polly here.
This piece was absolutely stunning.
These times we live in. They are troubled to say the very least. Our country is divided. And hatred seems to be driving a great deal of this divisiveness.
I hadn’t thought about this in a long time, and that is the fact that the MAGA followers support Trump in spite of his horribly hateful and reprehensible behavior. He lacks a single thread of integrity. And yet, they cheer him on.
Linda brings up an incredible point.
And so I have to ask. Do the people who follow Trump feel no shame?
And so I have to ask. How can someone support a rapist? A proven criminal. A cheat and a liar. A terrible person in every way who ridicules women, the disabled, and more.
I can’t imagine getting behind anyone who has such a history of corruption.
I would be completely ashamed.
