We knew nothing and now we know

Every human being who has ever lived has been born knowing almost nothing.
I know I didn’t. I only found out about it later.

But it is true. We arrive in the world without understanding language, history, mathematics, music, or the countless discoveries that came before us. Everything we know is learned, one question at a time.

Knowledge is one of humanity’s greatest gifts. Once we have it, that knowledge is ours. But unlike money or possessions, we can share that knowledge without it ever being diminished. When one person discovers something new, the rest of us have the opportunity to learn it as well.

And wouldn’t you know? That is how civilizations move forward.

Think about it. Everything is here because someone, somewhere, first learned it.
Every map, every refrigerator, every vaccine, every bridge, every quilt, and every piece of artwork exists because someone was curious enough. At some point, they asked a question and found the answer. They looked at the ordinary and wondered if there was something more waiting to be understood.

Discovery is ours. It isn’t reserved just for scientists or explorers.
It happens every day.

A child learns to read. A gardener figures out why one plant is doing well, and another one is not. A mechanic finally solves an engine problem that seemed impossible. An accountant finally balances that book.

Even understanding another person’s point of view is a kind of discovery.

The wonderful thing about knowledge is that it is never truly finished. The Universe is so incredibly infinite. We will learn, and learn, and learn. Always. I hope.

Every answer leads to another question. Each “thing” reveals two more waiting just beyond it.
That, I think, is one of life’s greatest gifts.

Curiosity keeps the mind alive. Discovery keeps the spirit young.
As long as we continue asking questions, we continue growing.
And perhaps that is the greatest thing of all.
