A Party By Linda Stowe
What makes a party a party? When we think about parties, we picture a group of people, special food, music, and decorations—and, of course, a reason to celebrate.
One party is pretty much like another. If you’re hosting a kid’s birthday party, you might trade the music for games or other activities; kids aren’t big on small talk. If you want an international flavor, you reflect that in the food, the décor, and the music. You could turn your space into a speakeasy, with low lights, bigger drinks, and jazz in the background. Or you could go to India, with bright colors, spicy food, and dancers swaying to sitar music. Even the Amish have parties—think about all the barns they have built.
Every culture has some way to create a party. It is human nature to want to come together to mark life’s events. What’s unfortunate is that most of us aren’t imaginative or adventurous enough to move beyond the prescribed holidays or personal milestones that supposedly call for celebration. Even our surprise parties are predictable.
We are a dull, distracted, and self-indulgent lot. Definitely not party animals.
