Yesterday, I wrote about meat, and which ones were the safest.
Safety is a funny thing, isn’t it?
Most of us try to be safe as we go through our lives. Most of us.
Better safe than sorry.
Play it safe.
Safe and sound.
Safety first.
Safety is no accident.
Safe. When we are safe, we are protected from harm and danger. We are not likely to be injured or traumatized.
It is one of my favorite words. Safe.
It swirls around us in many different ways. Like if we play baseball and we get a hit. We are safe when we reach first base, for instance. Or. Let’s say we have a precious diamond necklace. If we are wise, at night, we lock it away in a thing called a safe. That would be a strong fireproof cabinet with a complex lock used for the storage of valuables. That kind of safe.
But for most of us, it means being protected. Shielded. Secure. Safe from all harm and evil.
We strap on our seatbelts. We don’t dance on the edge of cliffs. Or drink poison.
We do all sorts of things that keep us safe, like using oven mitts, brushing our teeth, and not jamming a fork into the toaster.
But where and when are we truly safe?
Well. One thing in life, one beautiful thing, is finding people who we feel safe with. We all need connections with people. And what an amazing thing it is when we can find those relations that are trusted and secure. We can be ourselves with those people. We can share our hearts freely and openly. If we are lucky, we find a few of these people in our lives that we call our dear friends. Or our family.
Then there are times when we are fortunate to find this in a soulmate. Our one true love. The place we call home.
It was 38 years ago when I first met the love of my life. It took us a few years to get together, but we have been with one another ever since. And today marks that date of celebration. This is a gift to me. This love has saved my life. And for that, I am forever grateful.
May we all be lucky enough to find “safe” people in our lives.
What a gift. What a joyous and beautiful thing.
