Here is something.
On this date, December 19, 1955, Carl Perkins recorded “Blue Suede Shoes” at Memphis Recording Service studio.
Now, I’ve never owned a pair of blue suede shoes. Ever. I’m not sure they would go with blue jeans and a hoody. But. Rest assured, I’ve sung this song on many occasions.
Whenever someone steps on my shoes, my spiffy, sparkly, clean tennies, I sing out,
“But don’t you step on my blue suede shoes
Well you can do anything but…
Lay off of my blue suede shoes.
Well, you can knock me down, step in my face
Slander my name all over the place
Do anything that you want to do
But uh-uh honey, lay off of my shoes.”
Apparently, Carl Perkins had a real thing for his own blue suede shoes.
I mean, he would let people do a lot of things to himself. But be warned. Do not ever, and I repeat never, ever, step on his blue suede shoe.
For instance, they could burn his house or even steal his car.
He didn’t care if they drank his liquor from an old fruit-jar.
But.
Don’t do you-know-what.
Now me? It is a different ball game with me.
I just don’t want to step on anyone’s toes.
It’s not just about their actual toes, you see.
It means that I don’t want to interfere with their affairs. Or. I don’t want to challenge or disrespect them in any way.
This old phrase is often used when we don’t want to intrude on someone’s space. We don’t want to threaten their role or make them feel like they are being encroached upon. Essentially, it is us trying to avoid causing trouble. It is us trying not to step into a situation where we are not welcome.
Carl wasn’t talking about this at all. He just loved those blue suede shoes. They were a good place to put his toes.
