Country Music and More By Linda Stowe

Country Music and More By Linda Stowe

I have never liked Country music. I used to think it was because the songs were rather simplistic but now I realize my aversion stems from the nasal quality of the singing. It grates on me like the sound of nails on a chalkboard.

I have been thinking about voice quality recently because I listen to a lot of podcasts. Most podcasters are everyday people who have not had training in how to modulate their voices to an ideal range that listeners would find appealing. You only hear that from on-air personalities (except maybe for Fox News). I particularly find many female voices annoying, especially younger women. I don’t know why that is. Maybe it’s the fault of my aging ear canal, or maybe it’s a fad for young women to speak in squeaky mouse voices. Not long ago, they were all going for the vocal fry sound to mimic the Kardashians. Now they sound like cartoon characters. Or maybe I’ve turned into a curmudgeon who hasn’t kept up. There’s always that.

Polly here.

First. I love music.  But there are a few genres that I simply do not care for.
Country music tops the list.

I’ve never liked it. In all my life. There are a few songs that I can tolerate, but like Linda, the sound of their voices, the repetitive chords, and the twangy pluck of the instruments combine for an unpleasant listening experience. It grates my nerves.  Most of the time, it can’t stop quickly enough.

Second. Those pitchy voices. We watch Channel 7 News. For years, we’ve tuned in to this channel. The reporters are getting younger, and some of the females have terrible speaking voices. They are high-pitched and tinny. Squawking at times.  I can’t understand how they got into broadcasting.

Either both Linda and I are getting older, OR these things are truly annoying.

I’m pretty sure these things are actually annoying.
