Crime-iest Places. Depending on who you ask.

Crime is everywhere.  What is it?  Well, it has a few different definitions, but they all boil down to this one. Crime is “an action or omission that constitutes an offense that may be prosecuted by the state and is punishable by law.”

I checked the crime rate for Camden, and the statistics “were not available.”  However, an estimate was given.  The crime rate here is 1,125 per 100,000 people.  Now, since there are only 1,973 people living in Camden per the U.S. Census,  I think that shows that our numbers are pretty low. If I am doing the math right, that is approximately 22 crimes for the year.

Call Andy and Barney, please.

However, that is not the case everywhere. Despite ongoing efforts to improve safety in our nation, many cities in the United States have a really big crime problem.  Of course, no one likes that.  Not the residents.  Not law enforcement.  Only the criminals like the crime.

So, which are the most dangerous cities in the U.S.?

I recently read an article online.  To answer that question, they turned to MoneyGeek, a survey system.  They did some measuring.  They weighed crime data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) against research into how much various crimes end up costing society. The results were a ranking of the most dangerous cities by the cost of crime per Capita.

That is “cost of crime per capita.”

I imagine “property crimes” are more costly than, say, rape or murder or assault.  So I’m not sure this list is true to be true.
But here are the “Top Ten Most Dangerous Cities in Cost of Crime per Capita.”

1. Birmingham, AL: $11,392 per Capita
2. New Orleans, LA: $11,094 per Capita
3. St. Louis, MO: $11,055 per Capita
4. Detroit, MI: $9,281 per Capita
5. Memphis, TN: $9,056 per Capita
6. Baltimore, MD: $8,160 per Capita
7. Little Rock, AR: $7,781 per Capita
8. Cleveland, OH: $7,397 per Capita
9. Milwaukee, WI: $7,029 per Capital
10. Kansas City, MO: $6,398 per Capita

I decided to ask Geepy Tee about crime statistics in general.
That’s my AI pal, Chat GPT.

Here is what I found there.

Crime rates can vary significantly from year to year and can be influenced by various factors. However, as of recent data, some of the cities often cited as having high crime rates in the U.S. include:

St. Louis, Missouri – Frequently tops lists for violent crime rates, including murder and aggravated assault.
Detroit, Michigan – Known for high rates of violent crime and property crime.
Baltimore, Maryland – Struggles with high rates of violent crime, particularly homicides.
Memphis, Tennessee – Has high rates of violent crime and property crime.
Cleveland, Ohio – Faces challenges with violent crime and property crime rates.
Chicago, Illinois – While crime rates vary by neighborhood, some areas experience high levels of violent crime.
New Orleans, Louisiana – Known for high rates of violent crime, including homicide.

And Google gave me this.

1 Detroit  MI
2 Memphis TN
3 Birmingham AL
4 Baltimore MD
5 St. Louis MO
6 Kansas City MO
7 Cleveland OH
8 Little Rock AK
9 Milwaukee WI
10 Stockton CA

I was surprised not to see New York, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and Chicago on the list.
Good news for them.

Bad news for the other places.
I don’t plan on visiting any of those places anytime soon.
But if you are traveling there, remember the words to one of my favorite songs.

“If you go down in the woods today, you’d better not go alone
It’s lovely down in the woods today, but safer to stay at home
For every bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain because…”
