Do your buns match? Who cares?

People ask this question all the time.
“Why are there ten hot dogs in a pack but eight buns in a pack?”

This pops up especially in the summertime, over and over again? Why are so many people fixated on this?

The answer is simple. Buns are made by baking pans, not weight. So, they fit four buns per square pan. Then, they put two of these pans in each pack. Eight buns.

Hot dogs, though, are sold basically by the pound. A standard-sized hot dog sold in stores weigh 1.6 ounces, so of course, ten is the perfect number for a package, equalling 16 ounces. This started in 1940 and remains so today.

My question is this. Why the big damn deal?
So what? You have two hot dogs without buns. Cut them up and fry them with some potatoes. Or mix them in a pot of beans. Or toast some white bread, slather it with ketchup, and you’ve become Julia Freaking Child.

Get over it.
I mean, how many pickles are in a jar? How many servings of mustard in a tub? How many onions in a bag?
It doesn’t matter.

Improvise, for crying out loud.

You see — and this is my theory only — people have become coddled. Largely, we have become an “entitled” bunch here in this country. If something isn’t exactly how we want it, we get ourselves all in a snit.

They’re hot dogs. There are ten of them. Find a way.

People would rather complain than think on their feet. The bun problem is not that large, folks.

In a world where wars are raging, people are starving, and the planet is dying, we need to worry more about these things than hot dog bun inequality.

Eat a cheeseburger and give thanks.
That’s my new mantra.
And so I will.
