Boringly, yesterday, I wrote about what is beneath our feet. The Earth’s layer.
I mentioned that scientists have been digging to try and discover more about those layers.
Well.
Digging. It reminded me of another reason we dig. Specifically, drill.
And that is for oil. Texas Tea. Black Gold.
We heavily depend on oil / petroleum here in the United States. In fact, the US consumes more oil than any other country, and that works out to about 22 million barrels of petroleum per day. Per freaking day.
One barrel doesn’t sound so bad. But a barrel is a lot equalling 42 US gallons or 159 liters. I’ll say it again. We suck up almost 22 million of those barrels per day. Per freaking day. Planes. Trains. Automobiles. If we didn’t feel the need to move around so much, we would not be leaving these skid marks everywhere.
So, besides us. Who uses and makes the oil?
The top oil consumers in the world are:
United States
China
India
Japan
Russia
According to several sources, the top oil producers in the world are as follows:
United States
Saudi Arabia
Russia
Canada
China
But what about the digging? I mentioned that the Earth’s crust is on our top layer. The oceanic crust is relatively thin, ranging from about 3 to 6 miles in thickness. And the continental crust is generally thicker and can vary between approximately 12 to 43 miles.
The digging of oil wells goes like this. Shallow oil wells typically range from around 500 to 3,000 feet. These wells are commonly found onshore and in relatively shallow offshore areas. They are often drilled using conventional drilling techniques.
Deeper oil wells, known as deepwater or ultra-deepwater wells, can reach depths of several miles up to 35,000 feet (almost 7 miles). These wells are typically found in offshore locations. But when they do deepwater drilling, it requires advanced technology and equipment to reach and extract oil from these depths. And they are getting more advanced all the time.
At least we aren’t digging to China. Or maybe we are, in some ways.
