How strong could they be? Well. This bites.

Have you ever heard the phrase:  “Strong as an ox.”

Those words are true. An ox is a strong animal. But that phrase could be better, as there are other animals much stronger.

Have you ever wondered which animal in this world is the strongest, pound for pound?
Of course, you’ve wondered this. Who hasn’t?

Well. Today is a good day because I’m here to tell you the answer to this pressing question. So.  Who can claim the title of the absolute strongest animal in the world?

The answer depends on what you’re measuring. I recently read an article that ranked the top five strongest animals in three distinct categories: proportional strength, pure lifting ability, and bite force.

The first.  Proportional strength.
It won’t be who you think.  That is because insects are among the strongest animals in the natural world when it comes to animals that can carry far more than their own body weight.
So, here are the top five animals for proportional strength.

1. Dung Beetle
The dung beetle is the world’s strongest insect, capable of pulling a staggering 1,141 times its own body weight. That’s similar to an average person pulling about six double-decker buses.

And the rest:
Rhinoceros Beetle
Leafcutter Ant
Gorilla
Eagle

Next category.
Animal strength in terms of pure lifting ability

1. African Bush Elephant
The African bush elephant, the largest land animal, is also the world’s strongest animal in terms of brute strength, able to lift an astounding 13,230 pounds.  That is comparable to the weight of about four and a half Honda Civics.

And the rest:
Musk Ox
Gorilla
White Rhino
Tiger

Third category.  The animal with the strongest bite.

1. Nile Crocodile
The Nile crocodile holds the title for the strongest bite, exerting a force of 5,000 PSI. This sheer force allows them to easily crush the bones of their prey, making them one of the most formidable predators on the planet.

And the rest:
Saltwater Crocodile
American Alligator
Hippopotamus
Jaguar

And the takeaways from this?

Elephants, as we all know, continue to be amazing.  In every way.
The ox, apparently, is pretty strong.
And. Never smile at a Nile Crocodile.
