Hungry? Everybody seems to be.

I know I talk about food here quite often.
But we eat. We all eat. Most people love to eat.

As such, we either cook, scrounge or go out.
That was until COVID hit. We stopped going out for a couple of years, mostly. It is still a danger, but we do it anyway because that is our “new normal.”

Sidebar here: I don’t like the term “new normal.” I’m not sure why I don’t like it, but everyone says it all the time. The new normal.

It is like when everyone started saying 24/7. I don’t like that one either.

Maybe I’m old-fashioned. But things are either normal, or they are weird. Let’s just call them that. And there are 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week. We know, we know. But can we just say that someone does something “all the time,” or “frequently,” or “constantly”? Does it always have to be 24/7?

And don’t get me started on “it is what it is.”

Okay. Back to eating. And going out. Or staying in.

In-person dining was back in full force this year. But a lot of people — those who have the privilege — took advantage of ordering takeout and delivery.

According to a new report from Grubhub, tens of millions of orders were placed through the app from January through November 2022.

But what in the world are people eating? Well. The number one thing ordered at Grub Hub is the …… burrito. More than 4 million burrito orders were placed through Grubhub this year. (For the record. That number includes traditional burritos wrapped in tortillas, as well as meals served in bowls.)

I should also add that, for some reason, in 2022, people decided the burrito was the way to go. It took a significant jump from the prior year when burritos ranked eighth.

Number two on the list was my favorite. The good old cheeseburger. Times sure change in 100 years. Back in 1938, the New York Times declared the cheeseburger to be a weird new food fad. Oh, but the NYT predictors got that one wrong. Apparently, it became the new normal. People are ordering them 24/7. Yeah, baby. It is what it is.

Okay, okay. I’ll stop.
But I will say this. Ordering carryout is a huge privilege. We take it for granted. Yet, in many countries in the world, just finding a scrap of rice to eat is a challenge. And here in the United States, we can just pick up our phones and have gluttonous amounts of food dropped right at our doorsteps. Except for Americans who live in remote areas, miles away from the delivery range, such as myself. No food deliveries for us.

But for those of you who can, here is the TOP TEN food list ordered for delivery in 2022.

Burrito (bowl or regular)
Cheeseburger
Cheese Pizza
Pad Thai
Chicken Quesadilla
California Roll
Fried Chicken Sandwich
Caesar Salad
Chicken Tikka Masala
Boneless Wings

And so we give thanks.
