Is there really Karma? Or is it all just so.

Do you believe in Karma?

First. What is it? Really.

Webster gives us this.

karma | ˈkärmə |
noun
(in Hinduism and Buddhism) the sum of a person’s actions in this and previous states of existence, viewed as deciding their fate in future existences.
• informal destiny or fate, following as effect from cause.
ORIGIN
from Sanskrit karman’ action, effect, fate’.

The true definition of Karma can vary depending on who you ask.

Some people stick to the traditional meaning grounded in Eastern religions. Other people interpret it from more of a Western view of good and bad.
So with that, we see some different views on how Karma applies to life. In the Eastern way, there are Twelve Laws of Karma. I won’t list them all here, but they can be found in the Land of Google.

Buy in general it is thought of in terms of energy.

Everything is energy, including our thoughts and emotions, which are energy in motion. So, in essence, everything we do creates a corresponding energy that comes back to us in some form.

Simply put. Karma is mostly considered to be the notion that everything we do creates either a positive or negative consequence.

I believe in the flow of energy. So in that sense, I suppose I believe in Karma.
For instance, I believe that when we act kindly or do good deeds, that positive energy flows out into the world and touches others in a positive way. The same goes on for the other direction. If we flip someone off in traffic and yell at them, that negative energy will definitely be received by someone, somewhere.

On the other hand. I don’t believe in Karma in the sense that it “pays someone back for something they have done in the past.” This can be applied to the positive or the negative. In that way. I’ve seen some mighty fine people suffer and die from horrible illnesses. Children and babies starving in Africa. Women getting raped or abused by their spouses. And on and on and on. Or conversely, I’ve seen some billionaires who have everything they could possibly want in monetary rewards come from a past of being total ogres. So, no. In that way, Karma doesn’t seem right to me.

All I know is that being a good and kind person is probably the best way to be.
That’s what I shoot for when I get up every morning. Sometimes I succeed. And sometimes, I fail.
But I’ll keep trying.
And I’ll do this, not for some reward.
I’ll do this just because I believe it is the right thing to do.

Call it what you will.
