More Christmas Facts, You See.

Yes. Christmas is getting closer by the minute. We think we know all there is to know about Christmas, but there’s always something more.

The day Jesus was born. Sure. We know that. The donkeys watched. So did the cows. I bet you didn’t know that.

But here are a few more things about the day. Christmas.

The Largest Christmas Gift: The largest Christmas gift ever given was the Statue of Liberty, which was gifted to the United States by France in 1886. I think, at Christmas time, they should make a large Santa cap and place it on her head.

Rudolph’s Red Nose: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was created in 1939 by Robert L. May as part of a Christmas promotion for Montgomery Ward department store. He wasn’t originally part of the Santa legend but became a popular character after the song “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” was released in 1949. I love Rudy’s nose, but most of all, I love the Abominable Snowman.

The World’s Largest Gingerbread House: The world’s largest gingerbread house was created in Texas in 2013. It stood 21 feet tall and was made with 35 million grams of gingerbread. To save you the math, that’s 77,200 pounds. There was a big shortage of gingerbread men and women that year.

The Song “Jingle Bells”: “Jingle Bells” was originally written for Thanksgiving, not Christmas. It was composed by James Lord Pierpont in 1857 as a cheerful tune for the Thanksgiving holiday. But somehow it shifted and became associated with Christmas. Maybe it was all the “dashing through the snow.” Unless you live in Alaska, of course. Then it snows on July 4th, so it could be about that day, too.

So. A lot to learn about this holiday. Like, how many “one-horse open sleighs” were there in 1857? Santa knows.
