I’d have to say that Snickers were probably my favorite candy bars when I was a kid. Probably. There were so many that I loved. Dearly. But Snickers was always there at the top in Halloween trading and such.
Snicker. It loosely means “to give a little laugh” if you look it up in the dictionary. So, most people probably think that is where the candy bar got its name. You know. Eat one of these, and it will make you happy. Snickering as you skip along the candybar lane.
But. The reason Snickers are called Snickers is not what you think.
The name for this eminent candy bar comes, of course, from the big-brand company of Mars Inc., which makes those yummy delights.
The name actually traces back to a horse belonging to the founders of the Mars company. That would be Ethel and Frank Mars.
You see. Ethel and Frank made some money selling candy and such. Like the Milky Way Bar, for one. So they invested in some land and bought a 3,000-acre horse breeding farm.
On that farm lived a horse named Snickers. He was one of their favorites. But one sad day, Snickers died. And. This happened to coincide with business planning at the candy factory. You see, Ethel and Frank were getting ready to launch a brand new candy bar. But they hadn’t come up with a name for the chocolate covered, nougatty, peanutty, and caramely thing. And so? The Snickers Bar was born.
I’m guessing they didn’t publicize this at the time.
I mean, who wants to think about a dead horse when you munch on a candy bar?
It just goes to show you a thing or two about life. A name is not always what it seems to be. Things don’t always mean what they might sound like to the ear. Appearances can be deceiving.
More than that? A wolf can be hiding in sheep’s clothing. It happens all the time. But some people can’t see it that way.
I wish I could snicker about all this, but the truth is, it just isn’t funny.
