The Food Trip

Polly here.

This was one of my Wordle Word stories:

I love bread. Pasta too. Crackers, pretzels, dumplings. It seems that what I really love are the carby things in this world. Maybe above all other foods. I absolutely love a good pretzel beyond measure.
In the past ten years or so, carbs have taken a real hit. A huge movement took place, where everyone and their brother claimed to be gluten intolerant. Some folks even claimed to have celiac disease.
I think it was mostly a “get on the bandwagon” movement. Just like the whole “keto” thing that is happening today.
I’ve never once tried to quit eating carbs. I never even thought that I might taper off. I love bread. From the beautiful, robust wheat, all the way to the last little speck of yeast.
I think it is funny when people say they “can’t” eat these things. Yet, ever so often, they decide to “cheat.” And then they post all of this on Facebook or other forms of social media, detailing their escapades.
I know this is a real thing for some people. Food allergies and such. But for the most part, I think people carry it a little too far. Eat what you like, I say. Just try to do it in moderation.
About ten years ago, I got tested for food allergies. I got the green light on all foods except one. Veal. They said I should stay away from veal. I think my heart has a lot to do with it. I think a baby cow should have a chance in this world. That is all. I think a cow should be allowed to live in green pastures past the age of 8 weeks. ====> above taper yeast cheat wheat

And then, Linda wrote:

I’m glad your essay resurfaced because it’s a good one. The way some people approach food is complicated. For some, their devotion to a way of eating is almost cult-like and they look down upon others who do not follow their regime. Some see it as their mission to convince others to join them on the kumquat diet, or whatever. And still others are almost comical in their approach. “I am on a fasting diet. I only eat between the hours of 7 AM and 7 PM.” You mean, you only eat when you’re awake? And then there are those who are on strict diets except for Tuesdays and, obviously, holidays, birthdays, and other special occasions. For these people their “diets” are more in their mind than their stomach. Food is as controversial as religion and politics.

Polly here again.

What Linda said was SO true. Nearly everyone has some sort of thing about their diets.  Even though I’m not a picky eater, and I will try just about anything, most of the time, I am very regimented about what I eat.  Vegetables, fruits, and a little lean meat.  Over and over again.  And I’ve said before if something doesn’t taste great?  I’ll wait until something better comes along, especially at restaurants.
So.  It appears that I join with those people whose approach to food is complicated.
And our differences make the world go round and round.
