The good kind of hope

Our lives go up and down. It is true for all of us.

But. Some days, the world feels just a little bit too heavy.

This isn’t necessarily because one big thing went wrong. But maybe it is a bunch of small things. And those little things have a way of adding up. It feels just like that weight is sitting on our shoulders.

With this, the future feels much too uncertain.

But there is something to be done about this. Give it a little hope. Maybe this is when hope matters the most.

Hope is quite a thing. Some people say we shouldn’t rely on “hope” because it is a substitute for action. Or maybe because it prevents acceptance. They say that hope looks to the future needlessly.

But I think there is goodness in having sensible hope. Sensible.
Hope can be good. It keeps our hearts open when the world gives us plenty of reasons to close them. Our world can be such a hard thing at times.

But yes. I think hope is okay. Not naïve hope. Not wishful, denial-based hope.
But the good kind of hope. Those times that we tell ourselves that something in us is alive and still trying. We are still working on this thing called life.

And maybe hope reminds us to speak with gratitude. Even when circumstances haven’t been so good.

When our thoughts are rooted in love rather than fear, they make us better people. Those good thoughts help us move forward. Gratitude moves us this way, too.

Some days, certain things about our world seem impossible to me. Like nothing that I can do will make a difference.

But maybe those are the times when we need hope the most. To keep love in our hearts. And also, to trust that whatever comes next can handle us more gently if we have love in our hearts.

May we find the courage to keep doing just that. Gratitude for the goodness that exists, and hope for things to get better.
