For thousands of years, people have been searching for ultimate “truths” about our existence. The things of our spirit. Our souls. Our inner selves.
Many spiritual traditions suggest that, at our deepest level, we are more than physical beings. Yes. Many have said that we are beings of light. We are conscious of our spiritual selves.
We are in human form, for now. But what were we before? What will we be after? It is a question that has appeared throughout history in religions, philosophies, and mystical teachings across many cultures. With many people, in many forms.
As children, many of us all had a natural sense of wonder and connection to the unseen. Think about it. Our imaginations were vivid. We played make-believe. As kids, the difference between the visible and invisible seemed to fade away. I mean, how many kids have imaginary friends? Were they really imaginary?
As we grow older, however, we are often taught to value other matters. The world places importance on only the things that can be measured, or tested, or explained. Practical concerns gradually replace imagination. “Grow up,” they say. And when we hear those words, we lose touch with the deeper connections that once came so naturally.
So how do we view this shift away from our spirit selves? Is it a necessary part of growing up? Or. Is it a departure from a deeper truth?
Either way, as adults, many people continue to feel that there is something within us that extends beyond the material world. The spirit within us. Our souls. Or maybe we call it a quiet inner awareness that cannot be fully explained by reason alone.
For those who embrace the idea, there is a sort of “remembering” something that has always been present. It is the process of rediscovering an essential part of ourselves that was born into us.
This perspective holds that every person possesses an inherent capacity for compassion, wisdom, creativity, and love. Through regular moments of stillness and self-reflection, many people find greater clarity, resilience, and peace.
Whether understood as divine presence, higher consciousness, or the enduring human spirit, the thought is the same. We humans have the ability to live with greater awareness and to get back to our birthright, the part of us that was so easily connected to spirit.
Perhaps with that, there might just be more kindness, hope, and goodness in the world around us. Just maybe.
