Some insights for the day, from people smarter than I am. But as always, I have a thought or two of my own.

“The more sand that has escaped from the hourglass of our life, the clearer we should see through it.”
— Jean Paul
You would think this would be true of everyone. And yet. I have seen many people who have not grown wiser with age. In fact, sometimes they have gotten bitter and unwilling to learn or budge. I am more interested in spending my time with the people who are truly seeing more clearly with the passing of the hours.

“Our main business is not to see what lies dimly at a distance, but to do what lies clearly at hand.”
— Thomas Carlyle
Sometimes, what we need to do are the things that are right in front of us. I know, for myself, that I can focus too much on the big problems in the world and I have little means when it comes to solving those problems. Instead, I have found that it is more important for me to do what is right before me and to do it well. If I can make the world a better place in my own little sphere, I think that is probably a good thing. And probably, all I can do.

“To know, is to know that you know nothing. That is the meaning of true knowledge.”
— Socrates
I used this quote a thousand times. Socrates is right on this one. We think we know. But do we? By acknowledging this, we allow ourselves to see other possibilities.

“We are here and it is now. Further than that, all human knowledge is moonshine.”
— H. L. Mencken
Right now is all we have. Right now and where we stand. And that is that.
