Keeping with the spirit of Halloween and All Saints Day. Let’s talk about a guy who has to know Halloween. Mr. King. Stephen King doesn’t just write books. He builds worlds. Worlds that keep us awake at night. Worlds that creep under our skin. And then there are times when he builds worlds that make us cry.
Hollywood figured this out a long time ago. And that is why King’s stories have been turned into films again and again. Almost as often as they’ve been turned into our very own nightmares.
The results? Well, his moves have a mix of brilliance and disaster. There have been flubs like Dark Tower. And then, he turns around and gives us The Shining or The Shawshank Redemption.
These movies remind us why King’s storytelling is so enduring.
When you line them all up, it’s fascinating to see the range.
I have so many favorites. Like Misery with all the raw chills, where Kathy Bates shows us just how terrifying devotion can be.
Another one I love? The bittersweet innocence of Stand by Me. King is such a good writer. This story proves King can capture childhood as well as he captures terror.
And of course, there are the heavyweights. The ones I absolutely love. The Shawshank Redemption and The Shining. The Green Mile.
One is about hope clawing its way out of despair. The other is about madness clawing its way into a family’s soul. Both are unforgettable.
What I love most is this: King adaptations aren’t just about monsters or ghosts. They’re about us. His stories talk about our fears, our friendships, our fragile hold on sanity, our desperate need for hope. That’s why, decades later, we’re still lining up for more.
Because if King has taught us anything, it’s that our real emotions always live inside the human heart.
