The size. Our length doesn’t match our width.

These should match up in a perfect world. I think the law of our land should be that the land area of each state should coincide with its population.

This would get tricky for all of us, and say Alaska, though.

But here is what I mean.
I was wondering the other day what the 25th largest state by population might be.

And, I found that it is Nevada. Nevada has an estimated population of around 3.1 million people.

Okay then. Nevada, then, should be ranked 25th by land area in the United States.

But no. That is Illinois. The Illini State is number 25 in land size.

We are all wonky when it comes to land area ranks and population ranks.

Take Ohio. Ohio, by land mass, is the 34th largest state. It has a total land area of approximately 44,825 square miles.

But, Ohio by population? It is the 7th most populous state in the United States. It has an estimated population of over 11.7 million people.

How about the 50th state by land mass and by population?

The 50th state by population is Wyoming. Wyoming had an estimated population of approximately 580,000 people.
By land mass, the last little fellow is Rhode Island. Only 1,500 square miles. From here to there.

First by Land Mass: Alaska is the largest state by land area in the United States. It has a total land area of approximately 663,300 square miles.

First by Population: California is the most populous state in the United States. It has an estimated population of over 39.5 million people.

How does the Bible say it? Those who are first shall be last?
Well. That’s not even close to being the case here. We are all mismatched. Some of us are too big for our britches. Others can’t quite fill their own shoes.

I took a quick look to see how many of them matched up.
The only one I could find was Texas. It is number two in population. And number two in land area.
We’re Number Two! Say it again! We’re Number Two!

I suppose the other saying comes into play here.
I guess size really doesn’t matter.

There is no need to worry about mere size. We do not necessarily respect a fat man more than a thin man. Sir Isaac Newton was very much smaller than a hippopotamus, but we do not on that account value him less.
