Spud. The potato.
Potatoes have been a part of the human diet for a long time. In fact, people first began to eat potatoes around 10,000 years ago.
This started in the modern-day Peru and Bolivia regions of South America. Potatoes were domesticated by indigenous cultures all around South America. And then, the potato traveled to Europe and other parts of the world during those early years of exploration.
The USA loves potatoes. In the United States, the average person consumes approximately 117 pounds of potatoes annually. All kinds. This figure has declined from about 142 pounds per person in 2000. I am sure this is mostly due to the trend that carbs are no good. Even still, I can assure you that I do not eat 117 pounds of potatoes in a year. Not even close.
Anyway, one of the big ways we consume potatoes comes in colorful bags in the snack section of our grocery stores. Potato Chips.
With Memorial Day just around the bend, chip sales will be way up.
Everyone has their favorite. My go-to is Lay’s Plain Original Potato Chips.
But what is the favorite thing in all of America? Well. A Taste of Home Test Kitchen went on the search for the absolute best potato chips.
Taste of Home’s Test Kitchen put ten different brands to the test. Their expert panel judged these brands blindly according to these standards:
Flavor
Saltiness
Crunchiness
Dip-ability
Appearance
According to them, you have to have the absolute perfect combination of these five criteria if you want to have the best snacking experience.
And here are the results from the blind taste test.
First Place: Clancy’s
Second Place: Mrs. Fisher’s
Third Place: Old Dutch
I’ve never heard of any of these, let alone tasted them. I’m not sure if it is a regional thing, or perhaps only certain groceries carry them. Anyway, when I have a chip, for now, it will be a Lay’s Classic Original. Until I meet Clancy, Mrs. Fisher, or Old Dutch. Crunch.
