Underlying Issues By Linda Stowe
Every day I pore over the news of world events to stay current, and I must say that some days it seems like a full-time job just to follow the top stories. There was an earthquake on the east coast today, which follows a spate of strong storms that have been crossing the country over the past two weeks. People are still anguishing in the aftermath of the much more serious earthquake in Taiwan as well as the Israeli attack that killed seven humanitarian workers. And, of course, Donald Trump continues to flirt with judicial sanctions in his legal entanglements, only to get a slap on the wrist. There is so much grist that I marvel the mill hasn’t blown a fuse.
It feels like we’re at the circus and all around there are colorful lights flashing, drawing attention to so many attractions that we don’t know which way to look. The news media distract us with the sensational and meanwhile we don’t think about the underlying issues. Those earthquakes and storms are symptoms of the real story, that we are losing the climate change battle. Trump’s legal kerfuffles and Netanyahu’s hold on Israel are distractions from noticing the inroads our enemies are making on weakening our democracy. Has the mainstream news become as meaningless a diversion as watching game shows?

The truth of things? We humans are a mess. Our world is a big mess. And I’m not sure anyone knows what to do about this. Maybe that is the cause for the distractions. Perhaps they spread those problems out thin so we don’t see the imminent demise ahead of us.
I try to look for solutions to things. But the world problems seem insurmountable.
I suppose we should be kind and helpful. In our own lives. Where we can. And make good news on our own.
