You know me and words. I stumbled across one that I hadn’t heard from in quite a while.
Chutzpah.
Chutzpah is one of those words that just doesn’t sit quietly in the corner. It seems to demand attention.
By Webster’s measure, it means audacity or nerve. But not just the ordinary kind of nerve. We’re talking boldness that borders on outrageous.
It is the person who cuts in line at the DMV and dares everyone else to object. That’s chutzpah. It is kind of like that coworker who didn’t contribute to the group project, but they still volunteer to give the presentation, as if they carried the whole thing.
Yep, chutzpah. It’s equal parts guts and gall, and sometimes you admire it, sometimes you shake your head, but you always notice it.
The thing about chutzpah is that it’s not necessarily good or bad. It is mostly situational.
It can be inspiring, like when an underdog faces impossible odds and refuses to back down. Or. It can also be infuriating, like the guy who parks across two spots and acts like it’s his birthright.
Take Frank Sinatra, for example. At the height of his fame, he would stroll right into recording studios, and he’d refuse to do multiple takes because, well, he was Sinatra. Chutzpah.
Or how about Muhammad Ali? He proclaimed, “I am the greatest,” before he had even won a world title. Of course, he was arrogant. But he also had a vision of himself. For him, it was a declaration of destiny, backed up by skill and sheer nerve.
That’s the thing about chutzpah. It’s the fire that pushes some people into greatness and others into spectacular failure.
But either way, it leaves us watching, wondering, and talking about it. Sometimes, maybe, we even wish we had just a little more of it ourselves. The good kind of chutzpah.

Well. Imagine the audacity of it all.
