We know ourselves. The kind of soup we like the most. The things we are afraid of. Really afraid of. Our favorite movie ever. We just know.
Your knowing. Your inner voice. You knowing you.
There is an old saying that goes: “You don’t know someone until you’ve walked in their shoes.”
It is so true.
All of our lives, most of us are taught to look outward for answers. We go to school to learn. We also learn to ask around. Many times, we seek approval from others. We compare notes or follow the crowd.
What I’m trying to say is that we learn to seek answers from outside sources. And while others can offer insight and perspective, they can never fully know what it feels like to live in our skin.
But we do. Only I know what it feels like to be me. And the same goes for you.
Yet, the thing we often forget is that each of us carries an inner compass. It is that place, deep within us, that knows. It remembers our past experiences, even if we can’t recall them in our minds.
If we are paying attention, that inner voice speaks in subtle ways. It comes to us through a feeling in the body. Maybe it comes in a sense of calm. Maybe it shows up as a resistance. Sometimes it is a moment of clarity that just rushes into our minds without a shred of an explanation.
Learning to trust that voice can be hard for us. This is true, especially if we grew up believing that wisdom always comes to us from somewhere else.
I think we should try to listen to that place deep within us. Listening inward isn’t easy for most of us because it feels uncertain. But maybe the best thing we can do is pay attention to our inner selves.
When we second-guess our own knowing, we drift from our hearts, our souls, our minds. When we listen, those things all align.
No one else can understand the exact shape of our lives. And all that means. That is why the answers we are seeking are not scattered outside of you. Those good answers live within us. They are just waiting for us. They are waiting patiently to be heard.
