Baseball fan or not, one can appreciate Casey Stengel as one of the greatest players of all time. He started out with the Brooklyn Dodgers, which were then the Brooklyn Robbins. He moved around to several other teams over the years, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the New York Giants, among others.
Now, I won’t go on about the player he was or the manager he became. We all know pretty much how that goes. When someone is good at baseball, they are good at baseball. Blah, blah, blah. And yadda, yadda.
But, it was on this date, Mary 25, 1919, when playing for the Pirates, that he performed one of his greatest feats. While in the dugout, he caught a little sparrow. He was due up to bat that inning, so he placed to bird under his baseball cap, walked up to the plate, and tipped his hat to the crowd.
The little bird flew out and away, delighting the crowd to no end. I’m not sure if he got a hit or not. But does it matter?
Today, whether we are by ourselves or with a crowd, we should place that proverbial sparrow under our caps and set it free to delight all of those who are there to see. There will be a hundred ways to soar today.
