Well, it is bugging me, so I’m going to own up to my pettiness.
A little background, though. Celebrities are celebrities. If you willingly enter into a career of acting or singing, you understand that you run the risk of reaching that “celebrity” status at some point in your life.
By definition, celebrities are identified as “famous people.” The “state of being well known.”
We live in a society then, where our media tries to find stories and information about those famous people. And why does the media do this? Because most of the 7.5 billion people on the planet, who are trudging around in their crappy jobs, driving their beater cars, standing in long grocery lines as they try to put food on the table, lean over, pluck the magazine from the rack, and buy the headlines.
So it becomes a cycle. And when J-Lo and A-Rod break up, people pay to read about every last sordid detail. To be honest, I have never given those headlines too much attention over the years, and it seems it gets less and less the older I get. Albeit, there have been times when I noticed. I read the headlines.
Anyway. What I’m getting at is that celebrities get noticed, their lives become fishbowls, and that is part of the trade-off for getting paid millions and millions of dollars to act like a space cowboy or a jolted housewife with a knife.
Here is the other part. They do interviews. And this is what always gets me. I will see a singer, or actor, talking about their movie or album. And oftentimes, I form opinions about what that person is like “as a person.” It is hard not to.
I’ve been sorely disappointed, I must admit. Certain people who I’ve admired for their craft have turned out to be total goons. And so it goes.
Then there are the people who I think are wretched from afar, and when I hear an interview, my suspicions are confirmed. All of this is making me sound like some tabloid junkie, and I swear to you I am not.
I just notice things and sometimes form strong opinions.
All of this background comes about because of McDonald’s. I read this morning that they are finally unveiling their brand new menu for the holiday season. They’ve been taunting it in the news, but it has been released today.
The fast-food chain has teamed up with Mariah Carey for 12 days of free food starting Monday and continuing through Christmas Eve. Yes, indeed, McDonald’s will give away free food with a $1 minimum purchase.
Here’s the list if you are planning a visit or ten to McDonald’s.
Dec. 13: Big Mac
Dec. 14: McChicken
Dec. 15: Bakery item
Dec. 16: Six-piece Chicken McNuggets
Dec. 17: Cheeseburger
Dec. 18: Hotcakes
Dec. 19: McDouble
Dec. 20: Apple Pie
Dec. 21: Sausage McMuffin with Egg
Dec. 22: Double Cheeseburger
Dec. 23: Sausage Biscuit
Dec. 24: Chocolate Chip Cookies
I think the free food is a great idea. And I applaud McDonald’s for that. I just can’t stand anything that has to do with Mariah Carey. I’ve seen her speak too many times about how great she is, possibly the best person on the planet. And she claims because she is so much better than the rest of the lowly humans, that she feels justified in being the absolute Diva she is, turning into a demanding, temperamental brat when it comes to the people who serve her.
I might feel strongly about this.
Oh, I know. I should pipe it down. She may be a lovely person in real life. But from the outside, it doesn’t look that way.
The truth is, I think I’m getting a little cranky about all the “not nice” people in this world, and I’m taking it out on poor Mariah. She is, after all, getting paid millions to be the face of this “free food” campaign, which will feed lots of McDonald’s fans. It is a magnanimous Christmas gesture on her part, I’m sure.
So my apologies for being so obtuse.
I’m headed to Wendy’s for lunch today, by the way. Just in case you want me to pick something up for you.
