Zip it, will ya’?

I like a good ZIP code, I’ll tell you.

I don’t remember all of mine. I’ve had a few, here and there, in my lifetime.
But some are better than others, apparently. We’ll get to that in a minute.

The ZIP code, which stands for Zone Improvement Plan, was introduced by the United States Postal Service (USPS) on July 1, 1963. It wasn’t quite a “stand-alone” idea. Nope, our ZIP Codes started out as part of a larger initiative called the Nationwide Improved Mail Service (NIMS). This reminds me of the movie “The Secret of NIMH.” But that is another “nim.”

Anyway, the goal of NIMS was to improve the speed and efficiency of mail delivery.

The roll-out of the ZIP code system experienced its fair share of challenges. Many people resisted the change, and some businesses and organizations were slow to adopt the new codes.

But leave it to the good old Post Office. The USPS persevered. By the mid-1970s, the ZIP code was in widespread use across the United States. And that is how I always remembered it. By the time I learned my address, I was learning the ZIP code with it.

These days, not all ZIP codes are alike.
In fact, a recent study came about, showing the most expensive ZIP code in the United States.

Now, here’s a thing. It’s not the most expensive ZIP Code in America, but 90210 in Beverly Hills, California, is arguably the most famous. And it is up there with the cheddar, I’ll tell you. It appears fifth on the list. Miami Beach, Florida, and Medina, Washington, are the only spots outside of California and New York that made the top 25.

So, without any more prattling from me, here is the list.

And this just in. Newsflash. Camden, 45311, is not on the list. But I’m writing a screenplay. I’m going to pitch it to the Hollywood Execs next week. Camden, 45311.
See you on the big screen, baby.
