The Old Woman By Linda Stowe

The Old Woman By Linda Stowe

I am the old woman who sits at her window and watches the world go by. There have been many stories written about that old trope, the story of the watcher. There she sits, phone by her side, ready to grope for the binoculars for a closer look. The irony, of course, is that the only world the watcher sees is that which is within her scope. She has no idea of the world that exists beyond.

Polly here.

I struggled with whether to write anything with this or not.

This is a powerful piece of writing in a small package.

Oddly enough, many people might read this and think, “Oh, that poor old woman.”
But what is so profound about this is the realization of our human condition.

This is all of us. From the moment we are born onward.
There are people who get in their cars and trucks and drive to work or stores or restaurants. They go to soccer games or birthday parties. Perhaps they travel the world with their jobs. Maybe they go to far away places on vacations.

But here is the thing. The line from Linda’s writing.

“The irony, of course, is that the only world the watcher sees is that which is within her scope. She has no idea of the world that exists beyond.”

We are all watchers in this way.
No matter where we are, the true awareness only comes once we learn how to see. How to see and learn beyond our limited scope. No matter what we are doing.

And that, my friends, is one wise woman, no matter her age. For she truly knows how to see.
