Photo of the Day. This cow.

Photo of the Day.

Every so often, I will post a photo and make a few comments about it.

This is how the blog started, after all, way back in 2009.

So here is another photo of the day.

A cow. A beautiful cow at that.
I took this photo at Wild Hearts Zoo in Lewisburg during the Fall months of 2023.

Every time I see or interact with an animal, up close and personal, I am reminded about their right to live, exist, and thrive on the planet.

I believe animals have intrinsic value. By this, I mean that they don’t need human beings to give them value or purpose. Not at all. They are happy and content to be animals, fulfilling their lives as they do. They are always in the moment. They truly see the world around them.

Yes indeed. Animals, like us, are part of the natural world. We humans are actually pretty cruel when it comes to animals. Because we have not done everything we can to coexist with them. In fact, in most cases, we are crushing their lives. I wish, as a race, we humans could find a relationship with animals where they have intrinsic value beyond human use.

But. Our “use” of animals dates back millions of years. Humans have used animals for their skin, meat, milk, and other products. We have done it for human survival. Since humans have been humans, we have looked at animals as resources and commodities that are only valuable for human use. I suppose, in many ways, though, our survival has been dependent on them. Which is a tricky balance.

Yet. We should be humane in this. Animals have intrinsic value. They have hearts, and minds, and feelings, and emotions. They are not just “dumb” animals. They are so much more. They have a right to exist beyond human interests, wants, and needs.

So yes. This is a cow. A beautiful, thinking, feeling wonderful cow who has a place in this world. She is, indeed, a wonderful being.
