Euphemisms By Linda Stowe

Euphemisms By Linda Stowe

They say the early bird gets the worm, but what if you’re the worm? Where’s the motivation to get up and get going there? Or what about letting the cat out of the bag? What’s the point of putting the cat in a bag in the first place? We often hear that things cost an arm and a leg. Have you ever seen anyone who has purchased something with two of their limbs? Or how about the comment that someone is a little under the weather? Strictly speaking, weather describes the atmosphere that all of us on this Earth share. If you’re under the weather, you’re underground so I’d say you’re essentially more than a little under the weather.

We all speak euphemistically at times. It’s easier to say, “I just need some space now” rather than “I’m breaking up with you.” That’s why companies “streamline” rather than lay people off. Or we say that someone’s outfit brings out the color of their eyes rather than draws attention to their hips. We all do it. We don’t quite say what we mean because… well, it might be awkward. It’s just easier to use a euphemism.

So, relax. Chill out. Take a break. No one will take you at your word. And that is my point.

Polly here.

Linda really let the cat out of the bag on this one.
But what she said is true.

Which brings me to telling the truth.  I had this discussion with a few people some time ago.  I got a gift back then.  It was a framed wall print that said, “Tell The Truth. All The Time.”

So then I asked, “Should we tell the truth all the time?”  I think there are circumstances where saying nothing at all might be better than telling the truth out flatly.  Some people call it “tact.”  But there are moments when the truth can be too much in that particular moment.  Maybe some other time. Or maybe not at all.  I mean, do we humans have to know everything?  Probably not. Some things are better left unsaid and unknown.

But.  Along those lines.  I don’t think we should ever lie.  I don’t think we should create words and sentences that are not true.  There is a big difference between the two.  Lying vs. Not Telling The Truth (by not saying anything).

Or perhaps I have it all wrong.
But hey, the color of that sweater really brings out your eyes.
