Our choices of what we put in our mouths

Liver and onions is one of those dishes that people either seem to hate, or they love.  I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone say, “Oh, liver and onions is okay, but I’d rather eat sweetmeats.”

I love liver and onions.  But for the record, I don’t think there is much else worse than sweetmeats.  Maybe tofu.  Or kale.

All of this makes me sound like a picky eater, but I assure you, I am not.  I like most everything.  I’ll eat most everything.  Nothing could be finer than potted ham on saltine crackers.  That is the kind of gal I can be.

But here is the big thing.  I am a lover of food.  I think it is glorious, and I am grateful for it.  Oh, so grateful. I appreciate the full cycle of it too.  From the combines harvesting away in the fields, to the kitchen timers ticking their tocks, and the onion dicers chopping their chops.  I love it all.

I once knew a skinny biker who said he could “take food or leave it.”  He had no interest in eating other than what was necessary.  He could have been from Mars, as far as I was concerned.  I focus a good deal of attention on food and eating.  It is a highlight of my day.  That’s why I make sure I like what I’m eating.

I don’t want to waste my time on the mediocre stuff.  Like tofu. And kale. Not when there is Braunschweiger to be had.  Or roasted beets.
