Freedom. The power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.
We, here in America, know freedom. Some of us more than others. But all in all, and mostly, we know freedom. We are lucky that way. As countries go, we have it a lot better here in America than other places do when it comes to our ability to act freely.
But freedom is many things and can be understood in various ways. It all depends on the context. But at its core, it refers to the ability to act, speak, or think without being constrained by external restrictions, especially those that are unjust or oppressive.
My hope is that in four years from now, many of us will not have lost our freedoms.
Our freedoms might come in any number of forms.
Philosophical freedom: The idea that individuals have the right to make choices and decisions based on their own reasoning and desires. Our autonomy. Our will. Our own self-direction.
Political freedom: The absence of coercion by a government or other authority, allowing people to participate in decisions affecting their lives, such as voting, speaking out, and protesting. Here in America, this is mapped out by our Constitution. I pray that it will remain intact.
Social freedom: The ability to live and express oneself in society without fear of discrimination or oppression. It includes freedoms related to identity, religion, and culture. Identity. Religion. Culture.
Economic freedom: The ability to choose how to work, spend, or invest one’s resources, without excessive government regulation or interference. Guidance? Yes. Interference? No.
Personal freedom: More internal, this refers to the mental and emotional capacity to pursue happiness and self-fulfillment, free from fears, addictions, or unhealthy attachments.
But here is a very important thing. For all of us to know. To remember. Freedom comes with responsibility. It’s a balancing act between individual rights and the well-being of others rights. We must ALL ensure that one’s freedom doesn’t infringe upon the freedoms of others.
