You know? One of the hardest things to do in life is not letting things get to us. I think this is especially true when we’re younger or more sensitive. But no matter our age, it’s easy to take everything to heart.
Maybe someone says something off-putting to us. It might hurt our feelings. Or maybe it goes against our grain. Perhaps our “thing” might be that we tend to hold on to things from the past.
There are different situations for all of us where we let things get to us. Maybe we disagree with something a political leader has said or done. Perhaps an entire group of people is upsetting us. These things can come from anywhere.
It is at these times when we really need to remember that saying about letting things roll off us—like water off a duck’s back.
I know some people who are good at this most of the time. But. No matter who we are, we all have those times when we become truly upset about something that has been said or done.
The experts say that the majority of the time, the things people say or do are more about them and how they’re feeling, not about us. I’m not so sure I buy into that premise fully.
But no matter. The bottom line is this: If we get caught up trying to adjust ourselves to other people’s bad energy (or the world’s bad happenings), we lose sight of who we are. If we focus on their bad deeds and the negativity, we lose sight of our inner light. We hit the dimmer switch on the glow of our own good souls.
In reality, these bumps in our path become chances to strengthen our sense of self. We can learn from them, especially when we are able to dodge and deflect other people’s negativity. Or when we move away from the pitfalls in this world.
The more we do this, the better we get at knowing what’s ours to deal with and what’s not.
Eventually, we’ll be able to take in the feedback that actually matters—learning what’s helpful and letting go of what’s not. Learning.
We need to channel our inner duck. That’s right. Our inner duck. We need to learn to shake things off and let that water roll right off our backs as we keep going on our way.

The water is really rolling now. We hope.
