Smarty, smarty. In our world.

Hey, smarty pants.
Well, what about this?
What if that someone isn’t wearing any pants?  Can they still be smarty?

Of course, they can.  Especially if we are talking about all our pals in the animal kingdom.

But there is a lot involved when it comes to determining the “smartest” animal. In fact, the task isn’t as straightforward as it might seem. Intelligence comes in many forms, and each species has its own unique ways of showcasing cognitive abilities.

And then? I’ll say it again.  Judging animals by our human standards doesn’t do them any favors.  Because animals are smart in ways we humans cannot understand.

With that said, here’s a look at some animals that frequently make the “human” list for their impressive smarts:

Chimpanzees:
Hey, hey. These are our closest living relatives. Yes, those chimpanzees share a large percentage of DNA with humans. This DNA “closeness” is reflected in many ways. For one, they have advanced problem-solving skills. They use tools. And, they have complex social structures. Chimpanzees demonstrate cognitive abilities that suggest they understand their environment. They also know how to plan ahead, making them one of the most intelligent species in the animal kingdom.

Dolphins:
The water friends. Dolphins are known for their sophisticated communication systems. And they have strong social bonds. They exhibit problem-solving skills and self-awareness. Both of these things are considered a hallmark of intelligence. But they are part of their community. They have the ability to learn and cooperate in groups. This showcases a level of social intelligence that rivals that of humans.

Elephants:
Elephants are soulful, in my estimation.  They seem spiritual to me.  But, aside from that, elephants are renowned for their exceptional memory and deep social connections. They form complex bonds with one another and have been observed using tools, solving problems, and demonstrating empathy. Their intelligence is not just in individual tasks but also in their ability to form lasting social networks, a feat that’s quite rare in the animal kingdom.

Crows and Ravens:
You all know I love a crow. These highly intelligent birds are known for their ability to use tools, solve puzzles, and think critically. Studies have shown that crows can plan for the future, a skill once thought to be uniquely human. Their advanced cognitive abilities make them some of the most mentally agile animals on the planet.

Octopuses:
Octopuses are mysteriously cool.  With their complex nervous systems, they show remarkable problem-solving abilities and adaptability. These creatures can manipulate objects, escape enclosures, and even use tools, demonstrating a level of intelligence that’s unmatched by many other invertebrates.  Octopuses know things, I’m telling you.  And they’re keeping those secrets from us.

I think it would be impossible to crown one species as the smartest.  It’s more accurate to celebrate the diverse and impressive ways animals exhibit those smarty-pants abilities across the animal kingdom.

They know.
