Can you blame the guy? Really? I mean, he is an artist at heart. And his big dream, the dream of his life, was to have his artwork hanging in a famous museum.
So he did just that. He found a way to get his art on the walls of a museum. But just hours later, this guy’s hopes for his big break were dimmed. And it landed him in big trouble with his employer and the police. Here’s what happened. A 51-year-old exhibition technician and self-proclaimed “freelance artist” landed himself a job at Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, Germany. Day in and day out, I’m sure he stared at the walls in that museum and thought, “Hey. I could be the guy. I mean. THE GUY.”
So, one day, he smuggled one of his paintings into that Pinakothek der Moderne and hung it on a wall in one of the galleries.
But, after security discovered the newest addition to the museum’s collections, they promptly took down the display. And then, security told the bosses and the bosses fired the poor guy. This artist. Because of his employment at the museum, the man had access to the premises outside of normal opening hours, and no one noticed him putting up the picture. It is unknown how long the painting, which measured 60 centimeters by 1.2 meters (23.6 inches by 47.2 inches), was on the wall, but the museum’s press spokesperson said it was likely not there for long. One of the people in charge noted that she did not know what the painting depicted. Unfortunately, the incident also caught the attention of the police. They said that the man was under investigation for damage to property, a crime that could carry a fine or a prison sentence of up to two years if he is convicted. I’m wondering what kind of damage he did. Like, drive a nail in the wall? I mean, the size of a nail hole, and the guy gets two years in the slammer? The mean museum bosses have pressed charges. Now, it is up to the prosecuting attorney’s office to decide what to do. To top it off, the man was banned from the museum as part of his termination agreement. I hope the guy doesn’t get all sad and cut off his ear or anything like that.
