All the dough I’ve spent.

I’ve spent a lot of dough in my lifetime. We all have. Sometimes we are forced to spend more money than at other times, and the effects can make us dizzy and dazed. Like when the car breaks down and needs a new transmission. Or when the refrigerator quits keeping its cool.

But there must be an average figure.

Well, yes. It made me wonder how much money we Americans pay out each year. So I asked. Apparently, when looking at data that includes single-person households, the per capita (per person) annual expenditure is about $32,723. That starts adding up in a four-person family and beyond. Heck, $32 grand is a lot each year.

It made me wonder more. How much does the average household run through per year? And does it matter if you talk with a Boston accent or a Southern drawl? A California tan or a Midwest baseball cap. So I asked again.

According to recent U.S. government data on household expenditures:

West: Highest average annual expenditure — around $91,079 per consumer unit.
Northeast: Next highest — about $85,515.
Midwest: Moderate — roughly $73,654.
South: Lowest — about $69,373.
National average: About $77,907 per year.

Today, I don’t plan on spending any money. But invariably, it happens. I often add items to my Amazon cart. Or need some groceries from Kroger or Walmart. And if you count all our subscriptions to streaming channels or news outlets, that spending ticker keeps running each and every day.

We all need money to live.
Mark Twain once said, “The lack of money is the root of all evil.” And he was right.
We all have seen it corrupt people at all economic levels. From the very poor to the very rich.
I’ve spent a lot of dough in my lifetime.
