We lived in Charleston, SC, for quite some time. It is known as one of the most haunted cities in the United States. In fact, when a realtor showed a house, he/she always asked the host realtor if the place is haunted.
Some believe in this. Some don’t. The choice is yours. I always say that we don’t know what we don’t know. And who is to say?
With that, I found a list of the 10 Most Haunted States in America, Ranked by Scare-Level.
The 10 states listed below have the highest rankings based on some key factors, which include haunted histories, including the ghosts of soldiers still marching at military sites. They also noted some of the most hair-raising cemeteries and haunted houses in the country. And other scary things.
So here is the list of states. Scary.
1. Maine
2. Wyoming
3. Vermont
4. South Dakota
5. North Dakota
6. West Virginia
7. Kentucky
8. Rhode Island
9. Alaska
10. New Hampshire
Horror guru Stephen King has set many of his most famous works in Maine. It was probably for good reason. Maine has the highest number of ghost sightings per 100,000 residents in the country, and it has plenty of haunted locales to check out. Like Mount Hope Cemetery or Fort Knox.
Then. There is Wyoming. Apparently, it is a great state for haunting tourism if you know what you’re looking for. It has the highest number of documented and indexed haunted locations. This included alleged sightings of spiritual soldiers still marching at Fort Caspar. It also included former guests and owners popping up at the Plains Hotel in Cheyenne and the Irma Hotel in Cody.
Two of the most haunted cities in America are Charleston (as I mentioned) and Savannah. And yet? South Carolina and Georgia did not even make the top ten.
